If you live an area that is frequently hit with severe storms, such as hurricanes, then you know the importance of preparedness. While it isn't fun to prepare for a storm, it is necessary. One area of the home that you may not have thought to prepare is the air conditioner system. Although it is far more important to prepare other areas of the home, such as windows and doors, you should still prepare your AC unit if you have the time.

So how can you prepare your AC unit for a heavy storm, such as a hurricane? Here are three tips:

1. Secure the Unit

Before severe weather heads towards your home, take a quick moment to look at your air conditioning system. Ensure that all bolts and screws and tightened down, so that the unit can withstand strong winds. If you find any loose connections, tighten them up.

As an added measure, consider using rope or straps to keep the unit in place. Depending on the area you live, you might be able to find a hurricane kit, which will provide all the tools you need to keep your AC unit safe and secure during a heavy storm.

2. Turn It Off

It may seem like a no-brainer, but many people panic and simply forget to turn their air conditioning system off. While you may be running around trying to get everything done before the storm arrives, make sure you take a second to turn your HVAC system off. You should make sure that you turn off the actual unit as well as the fuse that goes to it in your breaker box. While you're at it, turn off the power to any electrical appliances in your home. Taking this quick step will ensure that your appliances—and AC unit—do not short out or become damaged by electrical surges.

If you think you will forget this step, make a plan and have an emergency preparedness list that entails everything you need to do to keep your home, family, and appliances safe.

3. Clear the Outside

Finally, take a quick moment to check the exterior of your home and AC unit. Remove any items that can become airborne during a heavy storm. Toys, outdoor furniture, tools, barbeques, potted plants, and anything else that might cause damage should be brought indoors.

While simple, taking these steps will help ensure that your air conditioner system survives the storm. When the storm is over, make sure you inspect the unit before turning it on. If you spot any damage, contact a professional HVAC service before you use the system.
